Welcome back!
Congress has been a factory of major headlines this fall. This week, a rare moment of unity followed bitter division over the Epstein files. Read about Congress’s latest bill here and find a prayer about the Epstein files here.

Happy Sunday,

How would you describe Capitol Hill in three words?

Here’s my submission: divided, chaotic, and corrupted. In the chambers of Congress, even basic governing is complicated by polarization, performance for the media, and election-focused posturing. But consider the contrast with the chambers of the Lord:

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphim were standing above him; they each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth.’ The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke.”
Isaiah 6:1-4 (CSB) (read Isaiah’s response here)

Given three words to describe the Lord’s seat of power and presence, the Seraphim are unanimous: holy, holy, holy.

The Lord of lords on His glorious throne is not intimidated by political chaos—He’s perfectly steady, unmoved by human storms. He doesn’t need to whip votes or eke out a majority—He’s completely sovereign and peerless. He doesn’t have to compromise or choose between the lesser of two evils—He rules with perfect righteousness and justice. He doesn’t schmooze to win votes and secure reelection—He reigns without term limit, without challengers. The Lord doesn’t lie, spin, or manipulate in backroom deals to get His way—He governs with incorruptible power.

Let’s pray that our congressional representatives would look a little more like our heavenly Representative each day:

Righteous Lawgiver,
You have created us for Yourself,
and You’ve charted the path to flourishing.1
You are the Way and the destination.2
You are Holy on Your throne, resplendent with glory;
ruling by a perfect law and presiding over an eternal, sin-free kingdom;
our Capitol Hill is broken by sin, corrupted by self-interest,
plagued by infighting, dragging years of legislative baggage.

Give wisdom to our fallen leaders governing in a fallen world,
so that they might manage sin-caused chaos with dignity and skill.
Direct their steps so that they direct a diverse country
toward flourishing and goodwill and peace.
Give them insight into the needs of their constituents,
so that they might serve out of love
instead of performing for their own gain.
Give them favor among their colleagues,
so that they might earn trust
and negotiate in good faith.
And when they disagree on the best way forward,
may they model gentleness, respect, and humility,
creatively compromising to bring about the good of the public.
Strengthen them for long, hard days,
and bless the work of their hands.

Thank You for our Representative, Jesus,3
whose mediation before You doesn’t just manage our sin
and make the best of brokenness—
but cleanses us from the inside out
so that we stand pure and righteous before You,
fit for Your coming kingdom.
May we walk in obedience to the Law of Christ,5
in whom we live and move and have our being,
and in whom we pray.
Amen.

Yours in Christ,
Steph Juliot
